This book responds to the need for a comprehensive and up-todate handbook for the study of the typology and history of the many and various liturgical books used for the Mass of the Roman rite. It takes into account the considerable amount of scholarly work done in this area in the last twenty-five years, especially the edition of sources.

The author re-evaluates many commonly-held assumptions which, with the passage of time, require revision. In addition, this study includes many new elements not treated in previous manuals on liturgical books. It is a carefully documented work, offering a clear synthesis of a complex field of study.
